It’s Prue’s birthday, and Piper and Phoebe are determined to throw her a surprise party. Unfortunately, there’s one small problem—Phoebe forgets to send out the invitations! On top of that, Andy is trying to whisk Prue away for a birthday getaway, making it even harder to pull off the surprise.
Phoebe also wants to do something special for Prue because she’s never really been able to buy her a birthday gift before. To earn some money, she gets a job as a psychic at a hotel. Technically, she’s using her powers, but since she’s doing it to help people and earn money for Prue’s present, I don’t really consider it personal gain. Her storyline is honestly one of the funniest parts of the episode because she’s desperately trying to save a man’s life, yet nobody believes anything she says.
The biggest part of this episode is the introduction of ghosts into the Charmed universe. Piper becomes entangled with Mark, a kind-hearted ghost who was murdered by a Chinatown gang member trying to steal his identity. Before Mark can move on, he needs Piper’s help because an evil spirit named Yama captures ghosts who haven’t crossed over and drags them to the underworld.
I really like how this episode expands the supernatural world. We finally get to learn the rules surrounding ghosts. Mark can walk through walls, only witches can see him, he can’t physically interact with people, and he can’t be hurt. It’s a really solid introduction to ghosts, especially because Mark is actually a good ghost. Later in the series we’ll meet ghosts that aren’t so friendly, but I think Mark was the perfect character to introduce this side of the supernatural world.
Something I really appreciated about this episode is that it reminds us evil doesn’t always come from demons or magical creatures.
Yes, Yama is a threat, but the real villain of the episode is the human gang member who murdered Mark. I feel like this is one of the first times the Charmed Ones realize they’ll have to deal with both supernatural evil and ordinary humans capable of doing terrible things. I always enjoy when the show reminds us that monsters don’t always have magical powers.
One thing that always makes me laugh is Piper’s love life.
Piper constantly talks about wanting a normal life, but somehow she’s always the sister who falls for supernatural beings. This time, she develops feelings for a ghost—which is honestly kind of hilarious because they literally can’t even touch each other. They’re basically fake hugging and fake kissing, yet she still manages to fall for him.
At least this time Mark is actually one of the good supernatural creatures! But I do think it’s funny that Piper wants the most normal life out of all three sisters and somehow ends up with the least normal relationships.
Prue and Andy continue their ongoing “will they, won’t they?” relationship.
This episode introduces another obstacle when Prue discovers Andy was previously married after meeting his ex-wife, Susan. I always laugh at the moment when Prue asks if Susan is Andy’s sister—even though she literally grew up with Andy and knows he doesn’t have any siblings. Whether she was being sarcastic or genuinely caught off guard, it’s a funny scene.
Prue is obviously upset that Andy never told her he was married, but I still think the biggest thing holding their relationship back is the fact that she can’t tell him she’s a witch. That secret keeps creating distance between them, no matter how much they care about each other.
One thing I really loved in this episode is seeing Prue and Phoebe continue to rebuild their relationship.
Compared to the first few episodes, they’re starting to feel much more like sisters. They’re having real conversations instead of constantly arguing, supporting each other more, and genuinely trying to understand one another. The ending, where Phoebe is finally able to give Prue a birthday gift and the surprise party comes together, is such a sweet moment.
I really enjoyed this episode. Mark is one of my favorite guest characters so far, and I think he was the perfect way to introduce ghosts into the Charmed universe. The episode also does a great job showing that the sisters won’t just be fighting demons—they’ll also encounter ordinary humans capable of great evil.
I also loved the balance of humor and emotion. Phoebe pretending to be a psychic had some genuinely funny moments, Piper’s romance with a ghost was surprisingly sweet (and still makes me laugh every time), and Prue and Andy’s relationship continues to slowly develop.
One thing I’ve really noticed during this rewatch is that every episode introduces something new to the mythology. Whether it’s new magical beings, new rules of the supernatural world, or deeper character relationships, the show constantly expands its universe. Dead Man Dating is another great example of that, and it’s one of the stronger episodes of Season 1 so far.
