The Fourth Sister follows Aviva, a lonely teenage girl who desperately wants to belong. While she believes she’s being guided by a fellow witch, she’s actually being manipulated by the evil witch Kali, who is trapped inside a mirror and wants to steal the Charmed Ones’ powers.
The episode opens with more Leo, who is quickly becoming an important member of the cast. Piper obviously has a crush on him, but Phoebe decides she likes him too, leading to a funny little competition between the sisters. They even joke that Phoebe always wants what someone else has. It’s a fun subplot, especially knowing where Leo’s story eventually goes.
Aviva is probably the most divisive part of this episode. She can be a little annoying at first, but it’s hard not to feel sorry for her.
She’s living with her aunt while her mother is in rehab, and she’s clearly searching for love, acceptance, and somewhere she belongs. That loneliness makes her the perfect target for Kali’s manipulation. Rather than being evil herself, Aviva is simply vulnerable.
One fun bit of trivia: the actress playing Aviva’s aunt later returns to Charmed as a completely different recurring character in later seasons, so it’s always fun to spot her here.
I also think Phoebe connects with Aviva better than either of her sisters. Phoebe understands what it’s like to be a rebellious teenager searching for direction, so their bond feels genuine.
Meanwhile, Prue and Andy continue their never-ending cycle of trying to make their relationship work. Unfortunately, Prue’s new life as a witch keeps pulling her away before they can ever have a normal date.
By the end of the episode, we finally get an answer to the question fans have been asking: they don’t work… at least not right now. Andy is frustrated that Prue constantly disappears without an explanation, and because she can’t reveal she’s a witch, their relationship reaches its breaking point. It’s a sad but understandable moment for both characters.
This isn’t one of my favorite episodes of Season 1, and I’d probably rank it near the bottom of the season. While Aviva’s story has some emotional moments, it just isn’t an episode I find myself revisiting very often.
That said, there are still some highlights. We finally get some closure (for now) on Prue and Andy’s relationship, we spend more time with Leo as his connection with Piper begins to grow, and the playful rivalry between Piper and Phoebe over Leo is genuinely entertaining. Even if the main storyline isn’t my favorite, those character moments help make the episode worth watching.
