Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is an epic fantasy adventure that brings Homer’s legendary Greek myth to life on the big screen. The film follows Odysseus on his long and dangerous journey home after the Trojan War while also showing what is happening back in Ithaca through the eyes of Penelope and Telemachus as they struggle to fend off the relentless suitors who believe Odysseus will never return.
Released on July 17, 2026, the nearly three-hour epic (2 hours and 52 minutes) features one of the most impressive ensemble casts in recent years. Matt Damon leads the film as Odysseus alongside Anne Hathaway as Penelope, Tom Holland as Telemachus, Zendaya as Athena, Lupita Nyong’o as Helen of Troy, Robert Pattinson, and many more talented actors. The performances across the board are outstanding, and every actor brings emotional weight to their role.
One of the things I loved most about this film was how it embraced Greek mythology. If you’re already familiar with the myths, you’ll appreciate the many references and adaptations throughout the story. However, you don’t need any prior knowledge to follow along—the film does an excellent job of making the story accessible for everyone.
From the opening moments, the movie never slows down. It’s one breathtaking sequence after another as Odysseus encounters legendary figures and creatures from Greek mythology, including Circe, the Sirens, the Cyclops, and many more. Every mythical encounter is visually stunning, making each scene feel larger than life.
Some of my favorite scenes were the encounter with Circe, where she transforms Odysseus’s men back into humans after turning them into pigs, and the haunting Sirens sequence. Watching Odysseus tied to the mast as he describes what the Sirens’ song feels like was mesmerizing and one of the most memorable moments in the film. The climactic ending, where Odysseus strings his legendary bow, was absolutely epic and delivered one of the most satisfying payoffs of the entire story.
And then there was the dog scene. My heart absolutely broke. It was such a simple yet incredibly emotional moment that perfectly captured the themes of loyalty, love, and the passage of time.
Visually, this movie is breathtaking. Every landscape, battle, and mythical creature is beautifully realized, making it one of the most stunning films I’ve seen this year. Christopher Nolan’s direction creates a world that feels both grand and intimate, balancing massive action sequences with deeply emotional character moments.
The acting is phenomenal, and this cast truly deserves all the praise and accolades they’ve received. Matt Damon delivers a powerful performance as Odysseus, while Anne Hathaway and Tom Holland shine as Penelope and Telemachus, showing the emotional toll of waiting for a loved one who may never return.
I also have to give a special shout-out to some of the supporting cast, who may not have had as much screen time but completely stole every scene they were in. Zendaya was fantastic as Athena, perfectly capturing the wisdom, confidence, and divine presence of the goddess while guiding Odysseus throughout his journey. Lupita Nyong’o also gave a powerful performance as Helen of Troy, portraying her as a grieving mother seeking justice against the man whose actions led to the loss of her daughter. It was a moving interpretation that added another emotional layer to the story. And I can’t forget Eumaeus, the loyal swineherd who remained faithful to Odysseus until the very end. His unwavering loyalty after all those years made him one of the film’s most heartfelt supporting characters.
Overall, The Odyssey is a beautiful adaptation of one of history’s greatest stories. While it does make some changes from the original Greek mythology, they serve the film well and help create an emotionally satisfying experience. At its core, this is a story about grief, perseverance, hope, unwavering love, loyalty, and finding your way home. It is an unforgettable cinematic experience with incredible performances, breathtaking visuals, and a story that will stay with you long after the credits roll. It is absolutely a film that deserves to be experienced on the biggest screen possible.
