Sounds Like Love By Ashley Poston

“The things that left never stayed gone for good—not really. The things that mattered always returned. Just maybe not in the way you expected.”

Joni Lark is stuck in a creative slump—an impossible place to be for a songwriter who can’t seem to write another song. One night, she crosses paths with Sebastian, a struggling musician who’s battling his own creative drought. Their brief but passionate connection sparks something unexpected: suddenly, they can hear each other’s thoughts, along with a haunting melody that belongs to neither of them. The only way to break free from this strange bond is to give the melody a voice and write the song together. But as they work toward an ending, Joni and Sebastian discover that the real harmony might just be the love growing between them.

“Mom was right—grief was a love song in reverse. The notes were still there, but they sounded a little different.”

What I loved most about this novel were two things: the romance and the family dynamic. Joni and Sebastian’s relationship was absolutely adorable—I was captivated by the idea of connecting with someone through the mind, getting to know them on such an intimate level, and even feeling what they feel. It took the concept of soulmates to a whole new depth. Just imagine a world where you’re instantly tied to your soulmate—falling in love would be effortless, without all the heartbreak.

Before the First Page

I was instantly drawn to the concept of being able to communicate with your soulmate through your mind—it felt so unique and intriguing, and I couldn’t wait to see how the author would bring it to life on the page. As a fan of stories centered around musicians, that element made the book even more appealing to me. This heartfelt, summertime read strikes the perfect chord for those who love stories filled with good music vibes, a tender romance between a brooding musician and a hopeful songwriter, and the emotional depth that comes with navigating family illness.

Book Synopsis

Joni Lark is one of LA’s most sought-after songwriters—but she’s lost her spark. Hoping to find inspiration, she returns to her hometown of Vienna Shores, only to discover her best friend is hiding secrets, her mother’s memory is fading, and her family’s music venue is closing. Then she hears it: a half-formed melody and a voice in her head that belongs to a stranger. When that very real, very guarded musician shows up in town, the two must finish the song that binds them together—without losing their hearts in the process. As Bella tries to move forward, she finds comfort in her growing friendship with Jacob Black. However, Jacob is hiding secrets of his own, and Bella soon discovers that Forks is home to more than just vampires. With the appearance of a mysterious pack of wolves, old enemies seeking revenge, and dangerous supernatural forces closing in, Bella finds herself caught between two worlds. As Bella grows closer to Edward, she discovers the truth he’s been hiding—he and his family are vampires. But with their intense connection comes growing danger, forcing the two to navigate the fine line between love and destruction.

The family aspect also moved me deeply. Joni’s parents were incredible, always supporting her dreams and encouraging her to chase what she felt was her true purpose. Their relationship with each other was bittersweet—so tender, yet heartbreaking to see Joni’s mom battling illness and her dad caring for her with unwavering love until the very end. The balance of laughter, love, and tears in these family moments added so much heart to the story and made it unforgettable.

“How do I forgive my past self for all the futures I didn’t become? I don’t know.”

Overall, this was such a great novel. It beautifully blends themes of family, love, loss, self-discovery, and following your dreams into a story that feels both emotional and inspiring. The characters were memorable, the relationships felt authentic, and the emotional moments stayed with me long after I finished reading. It made me laugh, cry, and reflect on the importance of cherishing the people we love and having the courage to pursue the life we truly want. It’s the kind of book that lingers with you long after the final page and one I would highly recommend.

Shelf-To-Table

Fish tacos with mango salsa and a side of coconut rice would pair perfectly with this novel because of its beach-town atmosphere and the dive bar owned by Joni’s parents. The fresh, tropical flavors capture the laid-back coastal vibes that are woven throughout the story, while also reflecting the warmth and comfort of the family relationships at its heart. It’s easy to imagine enjoying this meal while listening to live music at a beachside bar, much like the settings that play such an important role in Joni’s life.

For a drink, a tropical alcoholic cocktail, such as a rum punch or mango mojito, would complement the meal perfectly. The bright, vibrant flavors mirror the novel’s blend of romance, music, and self-discovery, while adding to the carefree beach-town feel. Together, the meal embodies the spirit of the story—warm, uplifting, and full of heart, with just the right mix of sweetness, emotion, and summer charm.

If you could hear the thoughts of one person for a day, would you choose your soulmate, your best friend, or someone you’ve never met before?

I would love to hear the thoughts of my potential soulmate. Not only would it help me find them, but it would also allow me to understand who they truly are beyond first impressions. I think it would be fascinating to hear their hopes, dreams, and the things that make them who they are. In a way, it would take some of the uncertainty out of finding love because I would know whether we were truly meant to be together. Of course, it might also be a little overwhelming to hear someone’s every thought, but the chance to connect with the person I’m meant to spend my life with would make it worth it.
