The Fake Boyfriend Fiasco follows Nik and Aria, who meet at a wedding when Nick is trying to escape the attention of another woman. For Nik, the attraction is instant, but Aria has a much more complicated relationship with love. After her previous relationship turned out to involve a stalker and attempted murderer, she understandably has a difficult time trusting people and letting someone new into her life.
Nik and Aria eventually agree to fake date, supposedly to help Nick ward off all the women constantly pursuing him—but Nik knows that isn’t the real reason. He already wants Aria and sees fake dating as the perfect opportunity to get closer to her. I absolutely loved the banter between these two and their overall dynamic. Nik was such a cute male main character and is definitely the golden retriever to Aria’s black cat. Aria has this tough, guarded personality, while Nik is completely smitten with her. I also loved the contrast between their lives: Nik is a rich, successful football player who comes from money, while Aria is a tattoo artist working hard to build a life and career for herself.
Their romance happens pretty quickly, especially since Nik falls for Aria almost immediately, while Aria’s feelings develop more slowly as she learns to trust him. Between the fake dating, jealousy, and their trip to Spain, there were so many fun romance elements that kept me entertained. There are also quite a few spicy scenes, so definitely be prepared for that!
There is LGBTQ+ representation in the story, as Nik has dated both men and women. Beyond the romance, I really enjoyed the side characters and friendships. Nik’s friends were so cute as they encouraged him to actually pursue Aria and helped guide him through his feelings since he had never really been in a serious relationship before. Their friendship added a little extra oomph to the story.
I also really liked Aria’s friendship with Jen. Considering everything they went through because of Aria’s ex, Aria carries a lot of trauma and guilt from the past. I loved how Jen encouraged her to move forward, reminded her that what happened wasn’t her fault, and wanted Aria to allow herself the chance to find happiness and love, too.
One thing I didn’t love was the third-act breakup caused by miscommunication, which seems to be a recurring trend with this author. However, the reunions are always so cute and special that I can almost forgive it! My biggest complaint, though, is that this book was simply too short. I wanted so much more of Nik and Aria’s story! Thankfully, despite the shorter length, I thought the book had a really satisfying ending.
Overall, The Fake Boyfriend Fiasco was such a fun and well-written romance. I loved Nik and Aria together, their banter, the supporting friendships, and watching Aria slowly open herself up to love again. I definitely recommend giving this one a chance if you enjoy fake dating, vacation romances, jealousy, spicy scenes, and golden retriever x black cat dynamics!
