The Roommate Risk is such a sweet friends-to-lovers romance that completely won me over. The story follows Jasmine and Rahul, best friends since college, whose relationship begins to change after Jasmine’s apartment floods and she temporarily moves in with Rahul. Jasmine has always avoided serious relationships and prefers to keep things casual, while Rahul has secretly been in love with her for seven years.
I absolutely adored watching their relationship develop. The story is told through dual POVs with “then and now” flashbacks, so readers get to see Rahul slowly fall in love with Jasmine over the years before watching Jasmine realize she has loved him all along. Their journey felt emotional, believable, and incredibly rewarding.
One of my favorite parts of the book was Rahul’s unwavering love for Jasmine. He loved her so deeply that he would rather remain her best friend than risk losing her completely. His patience, kindness, and devotion made him impossible not to root for. I also appreciated that, despite Jasmine’s fear of commitment, she was always there for Rahul when he truly needed her, especially during the difficult moments involving his family.
I understood why Jasmine tried so hard to keep their relationship casual, especially because of her family history and the emotional walls she had built. While I could empathize with her fears, it was still hard to watch her treat their relationship so casually when Rahul’s feelings were so genuine. Thankfully, watching Jasmine slowly open her heart and realize she had always been in love with him made her character growth feel incredibly satisfying.
I also loved the side characters and the way both Jasmine’s and Rahul’s families helped them recognize what they truly wanted. The video game arcade scenes were especially fun and added another layer to their relationship. The only part that kept this from being a full five-star read for me was the third-act breakup. I wasn’t a fan of it, but thankfully it was brief and didn’t take away from the overall story.
This book does include several spicy scenes, especially as their relationship shifts into a friends-with-benefits dynamic before they fully admit their feelings. Overall, The Roommate Risk is a heartfelt, emotional friends-to-lovers romance filled with years of pining, wonderful character growth, and a romance that was absolutely worth rooting for.
