The Skydivers by Chris Bohjalian

2 Stars

"Which meant two things: The pilot was in on this. And Pete wasn’t the target. He himself was."

The Skydivers by Chris Bohjalian follows two brothers who plan to spread their recently deceased father’s ashes over his farm by skydiving. The story is told through two different perspectives and timelines. One follows the events leading up to the brothers’ skydive, while the other takes place after the incident and follows a witness who saw everything happen and begins trying to piece together the clues about what went wrong.

Honestly, I found this story a little boring. There was a lot of background information, and I didn’t feel like things really started getting interesting until the last three chapters.

Spoiler alert: From what I understood, one of the brothers was supposed to die, but the brothers accidentally got their parachute bags mixed up. It is also revealed that one of the brothers was involved with some type of organization, and a Ukrainian man who was pretending to be a farmer was actually trying to kill him. Somehow, he managed to escape the entire situation.

Overall, I didn’t really care for this story, and it is probably my least favorite in the series so far. However, I am still interested in reading more from Chris Bohjalian. I wouldn’t mind giving one of his full-length novels a try because I’m curious to see how I would feel about his writing with a longer and more developed story.
